Mesh mattress

In 1888, Johannes Auping, a blacksmith in Deventer, receives the order from the director of the “Sint Geertruiden Gasthuis” hospital to design a bed that is more hygienic than the existing beds. The new idea consists of spiral braided iron wires that are fitted to an iron frame.

1889

Production

Johannes Auping realises that his invention can only become a success if he approaches it in an industrial manner. He develops machines to be able to manufacture his invention.

1890

First order

The "Burgerziekenhuis" hospital in Amsterdam immediately issues the first large order for forty examples of the “healthy steel mattress”.

1898

Auping in the Palace on the Dam

An order is sent by the Royal Family. The bedrooms of the Royal Palace on the Dam are furnished with Auping beds.

1912

First large factory

On February 7 of this year, Willem's son, Johannes Albertus, lays the first brick of the new large factory on the current Laan van Borgele site. The Auping head office is still located here.

1915

War beds

During the First World War, Auping rents out 30,000 beds to the Dutch government. Because the war continues for several years, this proves to be the solution to maintaining an acceptable turnover during the war.

1921

Founding of public corporation

In this year the “eerste Nederlandsche Fabriek van Stalen Gezondheidsmatrassen Auping Deventer” (first Dutch manufacturer of steel health mattresses Auping Deventer) is founded, as a public limited liability corporation.

1932

Exceptionally modern marketing

Auping is the first company to use brand building and is as such ahead of its time as far as marketing is concerned.

1953

Auping Cleopatra

The “Auping Cleopatra” is developed. This is a very luxurious bed model that will stay in production for a quarter of a century.

1967

Adjustability

Auping introduces the first adjustable bed. This heralds the decision to manufacture exclusive and high-quality products.

1973

Auping Auronde

Frans de la Haye designs the "Auronde" ; later equipped with numerous extras such as a head unit with bedside tables, moveable tables, etc. This bed is still in demand and has already been in production for 35 years.

1988

Koninklijke Auping bv

October 7 of this year marks Auping's 100 years of existence. The company receives the designation “Koninklijk ” (Royal). From now on “Koninklijke Auping bv” is the complete company name.

1988

Auping Belgium

The Belgian company Wilzo in Wilrijk is taken over and transformed into the sales organisation for Auping in Belgium. A big export step is taken.

1991

Duvets and pillows

Auping acquires part of “Nordisk Fjer” in Denmark that produces duvets and pillows.

1993

Auping Royal

Frans de la Haye designs the “Royal”, also called “The Bed”. The Royal is a durable, functional and stylish bed that is still the showpiece of the Auping collection today.

1998

Zevenslaper

Auping takes over the box spring factory “de Zevenslaper” and gains the capacity to manufacture box springs.

Auping Next

Ruud-Jan Kokke designs the “Next”. The Next is a bed model that combines characteristic design with functionality.

Auping Match

The Auping Design Team designs the “Match”. The many options in the respect of colours, materials, fabrics and wood types allow you to combine your own ideas and to create your own world with the Match.

The Weteringen

Close to the motorway on the other side of Deventer, a new mattress factory and distribution centre is built; it is called “de Weteringen”. The environment is a very important issue in this development, as with all Auping products.

Ultimate Climate

Auping is the first, and still the only, manufacturer of mattresses with built-in heating; “Ultimate climate”.

2005

Auping AVS mattresses

AVS stands for “active ventilation and support” and remains a true revolution. The AVS mattress provides better support and much better ventilation than other mattresses; the result is that you wake up much more rested in a hygienic bed.

Auping Superbox

Auping develops the “Superbox”; a combination of a box spring and a mesh base. The best of both worlds.

AVS mesh bases

The AVS (Active Ventilation & Support) mesh bases are equipped with Comfortslide®. The Comfortslide® allows you to adjust the hip and shoulder zone to your personal requirements.

The AVS boxspring bedbase is introduced by Auping. This revolutionary ventilating bed offers great comfort, hygiene and quality: the true characteristics of Auping.

Auping Match

The new Auping Match is introduced. The collection contains three distinctive styles of bed models: Copenhagen, New York and London.
