Autumn 2020 Piet Hein Eek will open a boutique Hotel in Eindhoven. The 13 rooms will all be designed and decorated by Piet Hein Eek himself.
He designed a bed of steel especially for his hotel. He himself calls it ‘a bed that already exists’. A sturdy steel frame with visible connections and clear lines. Piet Hein Eek wants his guests to sleep well, in his own bed that is, and on the mattresses of Dutch sleep Brand Auping.
The PHE Hotel bed has a strong, steel frame as a support for the upholstered Auping mattresses and boxes. The simple lines of the steel bed in combination with the cuddly velvet mattresses in soft green and pink are a visual surprise. The Auping mattresses and topper provide optimal ventilation and support while dreaming.
The design
This collaboration could be called ‘Dutch glory’. Two real Dutch Design brands that find each other in pure, honest design, exceptional craftsmanship and sustainability. The combination of qualitative materials such as steel, wood and beautiful fabrics and soft or tough textures has become a recognizable Auping signature over the years. Just like a clear design with clean horizontal lines. That is why the PHE Hotel bed fits Auping perfectly and why we are happy to supply our mattresses and boxes for it. We upholster the mattresses for the PHE Hotel bed with the beautiful velvet from Raymakers, from Helmond (NL).
Piet Hein Eek is a designer who graduated in the 1990s from the study program we now know as the Design Academy in Eindhoven. At a time of prosperity in the Netherlands, Eek chose to design a cupboard from cheap material: scrap wood. He consciously opted for simple material and a sober design. Now is not the first time that the Piet Hein Eek makes a side step into steel. And that is exactly the link with Auping. Johannes Auping was a blacksmith from Deventer who was asked in 1888 to make a ventilating bed for a hospital. He did that with steel wire and his string bean machine. It became the predecessor of the current Auping bed base. And to this day, every Auping bed still has a mesh base.

Piet Hein Eek wants to offer his guests as complete a context as possible: from idea to product under one roof. Until now, a hotel was missing at the location on the former business park Strijp-R. Since 2010 his company has been located in an old Philips factory. In addition to the furniture workshop where his furniture is made and which you can visit, you will also find his office, design shop, showroom, restaurant, exhibition space and gallery. A hotel will now be added to the site. In short, a lot is happening on these beautiful square meters. You can see Piet Hein Eek's designs over the years. His furniture exudes a sobriety that reminds us of earlier times. At the same time they are contemporary and unique.
For both Piet Hein Eek and Auping there is only one way of working: local and with the best materials. Auping has been connected with Deventer for many years. What once started in Johannes Auping his smithy has now grown into a sustainable bed and mattress factory. All Auping products are made to customer order in Deventer, with attention for people, the environment and the future. Also the mattresses for the PHE Hotel bed are made and upholstered in Deventer. The steel bed frame is produced in the workshop of Piet Hein Eek in Eindhoven. This workshop forms the center of the Piet Hein Eek location, from the showroom you have a view of the craftsmanship and the activity.
