Circular Business Award 2019

Auping has won the 'Circular Award Business' with the fully circular mattress 'Revive'. That was announced on 21 February during the National Conference on Circular Economy in The Hague.

Earlier, Auping was already the winner in the category 'consumer goods', and the bed and mattress manufacturer from Deventer has now also won the first prize, the 'Circular Award Business'. The Circular Awards go to the most innovative products or projects that show what circular economy can mean for The Netherlands. The prize was presented by Secretary of State Van Veldhoven of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

The various entries were judged by a professional jury, all experts in the field of circular economy. The jury - which ultimately came to a definitive choice together with the audience - assessed all projects on circularity, scalability, collaboration and the business model. The jury praised the fact that Auping's 'Revive' mattress is completely circular. "This product ticks all the boxes of the transition that we have in mind: Circular economicy often revolves around the closing of cycles at the end of the life cycle of a product, yet too little we see the next step: designing products in such a way that they easily are repairable and fully recyclable. Auping has done exactly that with the fully circular mattress. It is a tangible and qualitative product that is available for a large market ", according to the jury of the Circular Awards.

Jan-Joost Bosman, CEO Auping, received the award with pride. "Over the past year, we have achieved an absolute breakthrough by bringing a 100% circular mattress to the market. In The Netherlands 1.5 million mattresses a year are being discarded, in Europe there are 35 million on a yearly basis, according to Bosman. Mattresses are poorly recyclable and the majority is currently being burned. The 'Revive' mattress, developed in collaboration with DSM-Niaga, offers the solution for this. It is a high quality mattress of which all materials are suitable for reuse in a new mattress. "We also offer this mattress in a leasing construction - a completely closed loop that offers opportunities for both refurbishment and recycling, but always without downcycling. We open up the technology to other producers," says Bosman.

The Circular Awards are an initiative of the Netherlands Circulair!, in collaboration with the Government-wide Program 'The Netherlands Circular in 2050'.

Transforming Mattress Recycling: Closing the Loop with Auping, Niaga®, Wellman International, and TWE

In Europe 30 million mattress a year are discarded. Most mattresses are hard to recycle because of the way the materials are used. They end up in incinerators. resulting in substantial CO2 emissions. In 2018 Auping and Niaga launched the world’s first circular mattress. A mattress designed so the valuable materials can be infinitely reused to make new mattresses.
